Dr. Merati is the President and founder of Merati Economic Group, Inc., a litigation support firm specializing in providing consultation, evaluations, analysis, research and testimony in the forensic economics arena.
For over 30 years, Dr. Merati has rendered forensic economic services in thousands of cases, including business litigation matters resulting from breach of contract, business interruption, violation of intellectual property rights, unfair competition, construction defect, fraud, libel, breach of fiduciary duty and products liability claims. In addition, he has extensive experience in personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice and a variety of employment matters, including but not limited to, wrongful termination, harassment and wage and hour cases.
Dr. Merati has testified as an expert witness in over 300 State and Federal Courts in California, Arizona, Utah, Florida, Oregon, Nevada, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He has also submitted over 600 deposition testimonies.
Dr. Merati has analyzed a wide spectrum of businesses and industries ranging from the ordinary (food service industry) to the esoteric (boat landing rights). He has been retained as an expert witness in actions involving the pharmaceutical, medical, dental, construction, technology, real estate, clothing, skin care, hair care, banking, manufacturing, cosmetics, auto repair and trucking industries as well as in actions involving business appraisals, the entertainment industry, educational institutions, dairy distribution rights, internet companies, professional practices, franchises and many others. Dr. Merati’s expertise includes all sectors of the economy (service, manufacturing, construction, entertainment, transportation, agriculture, retail and wholesale.)
Dr. Merati also holds a Real Estate Broker license in the State of California.
Dr. Merati received his B.A. in Business Administration at California State University, Fullerton in 1981. He continued his education at California State University, Fullerton and received his M.A. in Economics in 1983. Thereafter, he entered into the Ph.D. program at Claremont Graduate University, where he received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1997. His areas of concentration in his doctoral studies include law and economics, labor economics and international economics.
After earning his M.A., he joined Natelson Levander Whitney, where he provided economic and financial consulting and feasibility studies for private entities and government agencies in the area of urban development and land use strategies. He remained at Natelson Levander Whitney until 1986 when he joined Brinton Economics, Inc. as a forensic economist. In 1998, Dr. Merati and Dr. George Brinton co-founded Brinton Merati Economics, Inc., where he remained until he founded his present firm, Merati Economic Group, Inc. in June 2000.
Dr. Merati has served on the faculty at California State University, Fullerton, where he taught business economics, international economics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. In addition, Dr. Merati has developed and taught California State Bar approved Minimum Continuing Legal Education courses aimed at teaching attorneys the methods by which to determine economic damages in business and personal injury actions and aimed at teaching attorneys how to depose economic experts in business litigation, personal injury and employment matters.
Dr. Merati is a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) under the auspice of National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA.) The CVA designation is conferred upon candidates with the requisite educational qualifications, established work experience and training to perform business appraisals.
Dr. Merati has also held the Accredited Business Appraiser (AIBA) designation under the auspice of the Institute of Business Appraisers. The AIBA designation confirms a member’s education and qualifications to perform business appraisals after successfully completing its requisite coursework, examination and submission of a business appraisal.
Dr. Merati is designated as a Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) under the auspice of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA.) The MAFF designation is awarded to those who successfully complete NACVA’s training to perform complex financial analysis.
Dr. Merati has also held the designation of Business Valuator Accredited in Litigation (BVAL) under the auspice of the Institute of Business Appraisers. The BVAL designation demonstrates a business appraiser’s ability to competently present expert testimony which supports an objectively derived conclusion of value of businesses.
Dr. Merati is also a member of the following professional societies: the National Association of Forensic Economists, the American Academy of Economic and Financial Experts, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.
